[Reporter Hong Youfang/Hsinchu Report] TSMC (2330), a leading wafer foundry, pioneered the industry's first smart energy-saving uninterruptible power supply system, which uses lithium-iron batteries to replace lead-acid batteries. Electricity, the uninterruptible power system of the Taiwan plant will fully use lithium-iron batteries, and continue to lead the industry in the practice of green manufacturing missions with innovative green technologies.

TSMC pointed out that in 2016, the company pioneered the industry's first smart energy-saving uninterruptible power supply system. In 2018, it further replaced lead-acid batteries with environmentally friendly lithium-iron batteries. By September this year, it had successfully introduced the new factory area Wafer 12 A/B factory, Wafer 14 B Factory, Wafer 15 A/B Factory and Wafer 18 A/B Factory; it is expected that before 2030, the uninterruptible power system of the Taiwan factory will fully use lithium-iron batteries.

TSMC said that since the uninterruptible power system was launched, the company's green manufacturing team has effectively extended the life of lead-acid batteries by more than 40% by improving the battery operating environment temperature, battery string reorganization testing, and battery activation; Dao, worked with suppliers to develop standby mode, and completed the "Smart Energy Saving Uninterruptible Power Supply System" 4 years ago, which greatly improved system efficiency to 99%, saving more than 14.4 million kWh of electricity every year.

In addition, TSMC also conducted a cross-unit evaluation by the Factory Affairs Office, the New Factory Design and Planning Materials Supply Chain Management Office, and the information technology organization to lock in lithium-iron batteries with the best safety, long cycle life, and environmental protection. In 2017 After completing the verification of the production line in the factory, the lithium-iron batteries will be gradually introduced into the uninterruptible power system of the new factory area, and the lead-acid batteries in the existing factory area system will be replaced at the same time, saving another 2.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. A total of 17.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity is saved annually.

TSMC stated that lithium-iron batteries are green and environmentally friendly batteries. In addition to being safe, non-polluting, and recyclable, after the introduction, it will reduce the number of battery replacements by more than 60% each year; at the same time, through the establishment of a "smart monitoring and management system", comprehensive control of lithium The health status of the iron battery, once there is overcharging or discharging, battery overheating, etc., it will immediately warn and improve, avoiding the risk of reducing the life of other batteries due to abnormalities in a single battery, and effectively extending the service life of the battery.

TSMC expects to complete the replacement of all factories in 2030, and has already guided three system suppliers to adopt them together. Together with the supply chain, they will implement the green manufacturing commitment and achieve the goal of reducing the carbon footprint of each unit product by 30% and saving 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the supply chain by 2030. sustainable goals.
